Liquid medicines include solutions, suspensions, emulsions, syrups, drops, infusions and the contents of gel capsules. Cold remedies such as cough syrup, nasal spray or homeopathic drops as well as solutions and infusions. Doctors, pharmacists and patients also assess the effect of a drug based on its color and appearance.


If this differs from the usual appearance, it is concluded that there is a lack of quality or limited durability. In the pharmaceutical industry, the precise determination of the color of transparent liquid products is crucial in development and quality management. Accurate color measurement in transmission according to CIE and ASTM standards to qualify the color of liquid APIs, injectables and other liquid products according to international pharmaceutical guidelines is essential. In particular, the precise assignment of internationally defined color numbers must be guaranteed even with the smallest sample quantities. HunterLab color measurement offers the perfect solution to meet these requirements, providing the pharmaceutical industry with reliable, accurate color values and color numbers - even with minimal sample quantities.


The task

In addition to the exact measurement of the CIE L*a*b* color values, the reliable determination of various color numbers, such as the EP color number EP 2.2.2, the USP color number, the Apha color number or the determination of the haze value is also required Examination of pharmaceutical liquids required. When measuring color in transmission, only very small amounts of the product are often available.

The solution

With the UltraScan VIS spectrophotometer, transparent liquid pharmaceutical products can be precisely measured in transmission. In the EasyMatch QC software, in addition to the usual color scales, all color numbers commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry are also immediately calculated and displayed (see box). If you only want to use very small sample quantities, HunterLab offers various holders and cuvettes with which you can measure quantities starting from around 300 µl. The layer thickness of 1.0 cm is retained for reliable measurement.


The measurement is very simple:

    Fill the cuvette with liquid. Insert the cuvette into the holder. Trigger the measurement. Read the measured values on in the software
